The pottery on this site was middle woodland. It is grit tempered. Preheated granite was ground up and included in the clay before the pot was coil built.

Some of the pots had a mica sparkle. This was from the granite which contained mica.

Pottery sherds were plentiful. This is a sample of the rim sherds found

These are common markings on the rim of the pots. the bumps at top are punctates. They are made by taking a stick and pushing through the clay on the inside of the pot, below are dentates, I recreated them by notching a shell and using it to press the pattern.

Usually the rim of the pot has the only incising. this bowl has been incised on the sides. Not many examples of this were found.

2 peices of this pot were found. Part of the tail and the head. the shapes indicated a flat bottom if memory serves me right. This is rare , most pots are round bottomed. This pot might have been the most interesting piece found on the dig. It was very intricately designed. The first suggestion was the pot was far to nice to be made by the potters in the area. It was a trade pot. I started locating clay and temper(granite)in the area and building pots. After several years I still cannot duplicate the work on the pot. Even the tools which made the incising are extremely intricate. However I did find the granite in our area contained mica. Probably common in granite, yet maybe not. The pot sparkles of from the mica inclusions in the granite temper.

Hopewell rim sherd. Notice the cord or fabric markings on the pot.

Replica of the rim sherd above. The rim sherd above was part of a several gallon pot. the replica is some of my work. It took me years and many many pots to get to where I could make them authentically. I have dug the clay , located and processed the grit temper, coil built and wood fired this pot.
