Below is a photograph of a canoe found about a mile upstream of the wehrle site. George Black found it many years ago while trapping. I wrote an article about it,
which was published in the Illinois Antiquity Vol 29,No3, May 1994.
The magazine is sponsored by the Illinois Advancement Of amateur Archaeology
the canoe was 30'8" long, hand hewn from possibly walnut.
I have spent my life on the river and a canoe of this length doesn't seem practical.
It probably is not related to the Wehrle site,
since it has characteristics of French design.
